Auburn UPC Aims to Entertain

From editorial assistant Morgan Ladner:

Being an Auburn student can mean so many different things. For example, for me Auburn means being a member of a sorority, Student Eminent Society, Mock Trial Team, Tau Sigma and Pi Lambda Sigma. For others it means being in the band or being a member of a group called Block and Bridle. However, one student organization that every student knows, respects and appreciates is the University Planning Council, or UPC as it is more commonly known.

This is a council of students who know what hard work means. How do I know this? No, I am not a member of UPC, but my roommate is (she is the new vice-president in fact) and I always marvel at how many hours of her life she willingly dedicates to the organization. For those of you who do not know what UPC is, it is the organization that plans all the student events on campus. These events range from comedians coming to campus, cooking workshops, stadium movies, concerts and even tie-dye on Cater Lawn (despite the fact that it is raining). I might also mention that all of these events are not only planned but also sponsored by UPC, meaning any student can participate free of charge.

Members of UPC work more hours than most students who have a part-time job do, except they do not get paid. I say this because if you know someone who either is, or has been on the council please thank them for all their hard work. Without them we would not have been able to watch "The Black Knight" in the stadium last week or enjoyed the OAR (a popular band) concert last semester. Speaking of concerts, there is a free concert hosted by none other than UPC this Wednesday featuring Ben Harper and The Relentless Seven.

It is really easy to show up, get in free and enjoy the concert. You never realize exactly how much work goes on behind the scenes, or at least I didn’t until I moved in with my roommate. Now I know things like the fact that Ben Harper wants prunes and Gatorade, expect absolutely no blue Gatorade, in his dressing room before and after the concert.

My favorite event that I went to this year (other than the tie-dye because who doesn’t love tie-dying in the rain?) was the Valentine Day swing dancing and dinner. I do realize this sounds a little corny, but Valentine’s Day happens to be my birthday and this event took place the day before so I got to make all my friends and boyfriend go dance with me. We ended up having so much fun! First, there was an instructor that taught us a few swing steps then we were off to the races as the Auburn Knights (an 11-piece band) played and we danced, to the best of our ability anyway. UPC is a great organization that makes Auburn University fun in unexpected ways.

Thank you to every member of UPC, the students really appreciate all of our hard work!
